Improve Your Circulation to Help Your Veins

To put it simply, poor circulation can lead to a myriad of health problems, including venous deficiencies. When the blood is not flowing properly, a lot of pressure is put on the veins, which in turn causes the veins to become inflamed or to bulge.

If you have poor blood circulation, you may experience one, some, or many of the following symptoms:

  • Numbness in the extremities
  • Change in skin temperatures in hands, fingers, feet, and toes
  • Lack of energy and/or stamina
  • Feeling winded after mild activities
  • High cholesterol
  • Feeling itchy in the extremities
  • Swelling in hands or feet
  • Sluggish memory or memory loss
  • Hair loss and/or dandruff
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Weight loss when you aren’t trying
  • Cramps
  • Headaches

Poor circulation can cause veins to become diseased; blood will begin to pool and twisting and bulging of the veins will occur. What can you do to help improve your circulation?

  • Move often. If you have a sedentary job, get up every so often just to get the blood flowing.
  • Exercise regularly to keep the blood pumping.
  • Wear properly fitting shoes that don’t constrict blood flow. Avoid heels.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Get a massage.
  • Try a hydrotherapy session. When your body goes from hot to cold water (and back again), you stimulate circulation in the body.
  • The following foods are known to promote circulation in the body. Try adding a few into your daily diet. They include: nuts, garlic, ginger, green tea, onion, tomatoes, cayenne pepper, and rosemary.

Think you might have poor circulation? Worried about the health of your veins?  If yes, it’s time to book an appointment with a vein doctor! Dr. Peter Mikhail is a vein specialist based in New Port Richey, Florida. He also treats patients in the Tampa and Clearwater areas.
