Venous Insufficiency Prevention Tips

Venous insufficiency is common. In fact, more than 30 million Americans suffer from venous disease, but only 10 percent seek treatment for it, according to the Society for Vascular Medicine. Some of the most common venous deficiencies are varicose veins and spider veins, and both men and women can develop them. Unfortunately, the only way to rid the body of these veins is to seek treatment by a vein specialist; however, there are ways you can help your body prevent itself from developing these venous diseases from recurring or happening for the first time.

In this article, we share some general vein health tips for keeping your veins and body as healthy as possible to ward off these venous deficiencies. Remember, many times, varicose veins and spider veins aren’t avoidable, especially if they run in your family. If these diseases genetically run in your family, it’s even more of a reason for you to be proactive about your health and lifestyle habits.

  • Be active and exercise regularly. When you move and get the blood flowing, your blood circulation improves, and your weight is likely to stay in check. Being sedentary and overweight increases your chances of developing venous deficiencies as you are putting pressure on the veins.
  • Pay attention to your diet so you can keep your weight within a healthy range. Reduce salt intake. Excess salt can lead to bloating and inflammation in the body, which can put pressure on the veins.
  • Stick to flats, sneakers, and low heels. High heels keep your calves from properly pumping blood up the legs.
  • Avoid sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time. If you have a job that requires either prolonged sitting or standing, get up throughout the day and walk or sit; take breaks to shake your legs out and get the blood flowing.
  • Elevate your legs when you’re resting.

Although the above tips are great at preventing vein disorders, they are not cures, nor do they guarantee that you won’t develop a vein disease. If you believe you are suffering from a potential vein deficiency, it’s time to book an appointment with a vein specialist! Dr. Peter Mikhail is a vein specialist based in New Port Richey, Florida.
