How to Care for Varicose and Spider Veins in the Summer

We still have six weeks of summer left, although in Florida, it feels like summertime year-round. With hot and humid temperatures, people are wearing less clothing, and putting on swimsuits more often. This means your legs are exposed, and if you have varicose or spider veins, you may be a bit insecure of showing off your legs. If you currently have varicose veins, the best thing you can do is seek treatment from a doctor; however, we want to share with you some ways to manage your varicose veins and spider veins during the hot summer months.  Remember, varicose veins aren’t just unsightly, they can also be painful, so you don’t want to be spending all your beautiful summer days with achy, heavy legs.

  • If you don’t want to wear pants all summer, get tan! By using a self-tanner, you can minimize the appearance of the varicose or spider veins on your legs and other areas of your body.
  • Make sure you keep hydrated on those warm, sunny summer days. Hydration will keep your circulation in check and reduce swelling in your legs.
  • Summer treats are a must for many, but remember a lot of these snacks contain high levels of sodium. Excess sodium will make your body bloat and retain water. This excess water in the body will put pressure on your vein valves; it will also make your varicose veins swell up, which will be painful.
  • Elevate your legs and feet as much as possible. Elevation will help the blood move back up your legs and prevent blood pooling from occurring. When the blood pools, there will be more pressure on your veins, and they will hurt!
  • Since it’s the summer, there’s plenty of ways for you to be active. From watersports and swimming to walking or dancing, you’re bound to find some activity that will keep the blood flowing. When your blood is flowing smoothly, the pressure will be taken off your veins, so you will have less pain and swelling.
  • Buy and wear compression stockings. OK, you might not want to wear them outside, but you can wear them under pants, a dress, or when you’re at home. These stockings come in more fashionable colors and patterns these days so no one will know you’re wearing compression stockings or knee-his. The compression stockings help relieve painful symptoms of varicose veins, and improve circulation.

By doing any of the suggestions above, you can help relieve pain from your varicose veins, but you cannot make your veins disappear. The only way to get rid of varicose veins is through a vein treatment. To book a consult with vein specialist Dr. Peter Mikhail, click here or call 727-312-4844.
